Delay due to unforseen additional work

I am having a new HVAC system put in my crawlspace. 7 days into the work, the contractor identified some repairs needed to the block. We stopped work and I am now trying to get someone with expertise in to fix the problem. Since it is September everyone is very busy and I'm still working on getting quotes and time commitments.

On the 5th day of the delay, the contractor became quite aggressive, wanting additional money toward the contract and saying that the delay was not his fault and he needed capital to do his next job. I gave him additional money (half of contract), but the job is still not complete and I intend to have him back and honour the contract. Should I be compensating this contractor for the delay or should this contractor have the means to mitigate this type of situation and risk manage it?

Thanks, Stressed out Homeowner

Wow extra $$ really? Sure it would be nice, if you called me, there would be no additional charge at worst, would not be completed likely when you want as I would have other jobs scheduled, however I would do my best to complete the job asap once everything was done

Geez... talk about an unfortunate problem. Believe it or not, we hear of these "horror" stories everyday and, we are always left flabbergasted. When a contractor or tradesmen signs an agreement to do the a job, he's expected there everyday until it's completed!

Thanks,

Ian
