I have 22 pot lights 6 watt LED on a 150 watt dimmer and I can hear a very faint buzz. Is this overloaded? Can it cause electrical harm? These are outdoor pot lights. In this case should I have two separate switches or get a 600 watt dimmer switch?
Hi. This is common. First make sure the LED pot lights are dimmable. If not then nothing may help. If they are dimmable then it has to do more with dimmer compatability. In our experience, the Lutron Caseta electronic dimmer switches are the most compatible, however, the most expensive. The other benefit is home automation ability. This is the dimmer system we now typically use. We also assume they are wired properly including being bonded (grounded). The other issue can be mixed loads where you have other LEDs on circuit or non LEDs. The voltage drop may also be too high on this circuit if other loads are connected to the same branch circuit. Although the overall wattage is low, we would run a dedicated feed for outdoor pot lights and for this quantity.
