I have popcorn ceiling and would like to paint but was told I need a special sealer first. I need advice on what I need to do to cover 1500sq ft of popcorn ceiling. Options? If it's better to remove it, approximately how much would that cost because. Unless it's as easy as painting, it's probably more work than I can do myself. Is there a special paint I should use if I keep the popcorn?
Can someone provide advice on what to do?
Painting the ceiling would probably be your easiest and most cost effective option. Because the material used for the popcorn ceilings is water-based it is recommended to use an oil based primer before painting to avoid the ceiling "sagging" or peeling off on your roller. Kills is a good brand for this, then top coat with your regular ceiling paint. Also make sure to use a heavy texture roller (min 18mm) and take the time to cover all the floors and walls with plastic, things could get messy!
If you want to go flat on the ceiling you can scrape it, sand it, prime and paint it (very Messy!!!) OR skim it out smooth either method you'd probably want to hire a professional for.
Our company uses Lime Plaster method that requires no sanding and we can skim right over the existing ceiling texture. Most projects are ready for paint in one day using this method.
Hope this helps!
If your popcorn ceilings have never been painted then paint with Zinsser. It is an alkyd paint so it wont pull your popcorn off your ceiling. It is the same white as ceiling paint. The can used to say ceiling paint on it. One coat generally does it. Make sure all items are covered ...it splatters very easily.
If your ceilings have been previously painted a regular acrylic ceiling paint will work.
