Does the window need to be a fire escape? It is 20" X 30".
Hi Daniel
The square footage area of your window is okay (4.166 sq ft) and the width or length dimensions looks fine as long as you are measuring inside the window frame. BUT does your window meet the requirements in the second paragraph below?
Ontario Building Code states that the escape window must have a minimum total square window area of .35m sq or 3.76 sq ft AND no height or width dimension less than 380mm or 14.9"
Also if the window opens into a window well there must be a clearance of 550mm or 21 5/8" even if the window swings open into the well.
If your not sure get a licensed contractor to review your window.
Hope this helps. If there are nay other questions please don't hesitate to ask.
Thank-you
Dave
Hi Daniel,
If this is for your own personal use, as a recreational room your window is fine as it is. However, if you are using it as a rental space there are strict building codes to follow.
In either scenario, building permits and electrical permits are required.
Hopefully this helps you.
