I am looking to get an exterior door replaced and I think there is some wood water damage inside. Would a carpenter be the best person to hire for this?

Annjalene, No, you don't need a carpenter. You could hire one but door replacement is fairly straight forward for any contractor. A handyman is a freelance contractor and may be able to replace the door and related wood (studs, frame, casing, etc.) that you may have issues with. Call around and ask for their experience with door and window installation.
A reputable contractor can take care of your door and repairs. By reputable meaning that they may be a member of Bbb or Reno Mark contractor or a home builder association member to name a few. Being a member of a group as above means the contractor abuses by a firm code and normally includes a warranty. Most anyone can install a door but not everyone can do it CORRECTLY.
We have probably done over 1000 doors in Winnipeg including government contracts.
Hope this info is helpful.
