Drywall installation

I would personally never have seams above windows or door frames... That is just poor planning and laziness on the installers.

The only consequence really is over time the house will shift and the seams may be more apparent.

In regards to ceiling or walls being drywall end first... I always personally start with the ceiling. Also, make sure the installers stagger the sheets for a better overall finish when taping.

Always install ceiling first, using the bigest boards you can get into the room you are finishing, ( rent a board lifter)if your room is nine feet tall, you can purchase 54" wide drywall, for laydown. Install top sheet first Toe hook your drywall around windows and doors, or they will crack, even if it's only 6" on both sides you can fill in the middle. Measure the area, before you start, so you don"t end up with a 4" strip at the end. Use concrete fill to fill in big gaps or broken corners, before taping.

It is always wise to avoid seams over a door or window. If it is not possible to avoid seams over the doors and windows ensure that the seams are in the middle of the door or window. If the seam is located over the corner of the door or window it will crack very soon. If the seam is in the middle of the door or window it may never crack.

The ceiling should always be drywalled first. Remember that the fewer joints in a drywall job the less work is required to finish the job( less taping, less mudding, less sanding) so use the largest sheets possible. You can rent a drywall lift from your local tool rental store to facilitate placing the larger sheets of drywall.

It is better to avoid seams above doors and windows. Especially doors because you use them every day. Always you install the ceiling first. Do not screw the drywall ceiling all the way to the end of the wall. Stay away around 4 inches.

Cieling drywall is always installed first. The drywall on the walls helps carry the load of the edges of the cieling sheets. And this is applicable to all dry wall cielings that are against the attic space, there is more contraction and expansion of the lumber in that area. There for any slight movement on the out side edges is burried by the sheets on the wall.

To answer your question about seams. No there should not be any visible.

When I voiced my concerns about the drywall was told that he never had a problem before and doesn't seem to want to correct my concerns - his taper will correct it when he shows up - but i cannot afford to fix it after the fact.

Does the contractor offer a warranty and if so, how long? Most contractors who say they have never had a problem usually are telling the truth. When he tells you that he`s never had a problem before does he come across as being confident and does he body language tell you otherwise?

Did he provide references to you so as you could check them? Did you check them?

I apologize but if Contractors are reputable they will offer all the information necessary for the homeowner to feel as though they are being taken care of every step of the way. And it is the homeowners responsibility to follow up on all information offered.

Hopefully, you have a good warranty with your Contractor ... but all in all, there is a time when all homeowners need to trust the Contractor they have hired and to alllow the process to be completed.

"...he never had a problem before..." doesn't automatically mean there were never a problem before.

Sometimes a contractor think's he did a good job because no customer called him ever back to fix things. However It is possible other homeowners had problems and just called another guy to fix it because the first guy did it obviously wrong, so he was unable to do it right. Why should he able to fix it resp. to do do it right the second time ???

This is at least my experience when people asking me if I am able to fix things or to build as shower which is NOT leaking after a short time of using.
