Hi, still scouring the market for a home but we came across a fixer upper we're fairly comfortable with. The only issue it has baseboard heating, and we'd need to build the ductwork from the basement to the 2nd floor where the bedrooms are. My fear is we're going to lose ceiling space in the basement - it's fairly tight already at 6'3". Has anyone done renos like this? Will we lose a ton of headspace?
Hi,
Your best option is to run the duct along one side of the house and have the runs go into the joists. This shouldn't effect the basement head space too much. Typical supply and return ducts are 8 in height and the supply is hung 1 below the joists. Finished duct will be 9 below joists.
you are going to lose headspace no way around it...any pro and "code states" always runs duct in joist but you will have some perpendicular as you are not allowed to cut in joist so some runs will be under the joist so now you will have under 5 feet in a few areas,,no way around it...your basement is not conducive to a living space so use accordingly..Cheers
