I'm looking at installing a sauna in my basement. The one place it would really fit and look good, would be right where my sump pump is. Can I build my sauna around my sump pump? In other words, the sump pump would be under a bench in my sauna.
There is nothing in the Building Code that prohibits you from doing this. Newer sumps contain sealed covers to inhibit soil gases such as radon. If the sump is not well sealed it would be advisable to either make improvements and/or create a seal around the bench to restrict gases from the sauna. Of course the sump will need to be readily accessible for servicing.
If there is any electrical involved within the confines of the sump and the sauna, it must conform to a damp sauna environment, meaning any boxes, fittings, outlets, cords, must be approved and gfci protected, not only with an outlet, but the feeding wire and box as well if it has nay metal parts.
