Expanding driveway

Many owners have expanded their driveways in this manner:

Retain the 2 car wide asphalt driveway. Then expand the 1 or 2 sides with inter-locking to accommodate a total of 3 cars.

My question: Will it look horrible, will it look like a cut and paste (repair) job?

My preference is: not to change the width or length of the builder's driveway as it will upset the symmetry of the house.

I will change 100% (no less than 100%) of the asphalt to interlocking, I will not add 20% of interlocking to the present driveway as it will spoil the appearance of the driveway.

Please share your views with me.

Hi,

You can cut out a border width of the asphalt from both sides of the driveway then install the border of interlock and this would not change the dimensions of the driveway yet not look like a cut and paste job. Very common method used.

Question: Which would look better?

100% untouched asphalt

OR

95% untouched asphalt with the "both side borders made of interlocking" = no change in the width of the driveway and hence it would not affect the symmetry of it?

Hi Martin,

It's your house so our opinion doesn't really matter. Drive around your neighborhood in the spring and see what you like. Take a few pictures of different driveways so you can compare and decide later.

As far as the appearance is concerned, if you get some pros to do it and you give them a clear picture of what you want it will always look professional. If you get some hacks to do it, that's what it will look like. You get what you pay for!

Good luck with it.
