quick question: I wan to remove the small exterior light over an exterior basement door - but not replace it, just fit a piece of vinyl siding over the hole. what do I do with the 3 exposed wires after removing the fixture? thanks!
Hello, the wire should be disconnected and removed from your electrical panel. then the wires in the box can be cut and covered safely.
Like Aaron said.
If you are going to cover over the box and wire with siding, you needed to disable the possibility of reusing the wire. So you needed to disconnect it from the panel and be cut.
If you planning that one day you will reuse the wire, then you needed to have that box exposed with a cover plate and Marrett the wire inside the box
You don't want someone that didn't know you have cover the box to accidentally turn on the breaker and start a fire behind the siding.
Hire an electrician to disconnect the wiring from the panel. Once that is done remove the wire patch the hole and side over it
Any wires must be disconnected from the source before covering them up. Otherwise all wiring terminations must be accessible, so a blank weatherproof cover plate may be your best option here after capping the wires off with an approved wire connector. Note: It;s always a good idea to have a licensed electrical contractor look at any electrical situations on site that you may have.
The building code may require you have that fixture at the door location. Before you disconnect anything, I would check that first. If it can be disconnected, then as stated, find the source of the wire (likely a switch) and disconnect it there.

Hi ,,
Make sure the wires are disconnected and removed from your panel or if is not make a junction and put a cover plate on it .

Sam
thanks for info.
Once I remove the exterior fixture, instead of disconnecting wires from the panel, can I disconnect them from the light on/off wall switch, inside the door? or is that not a good idea either?
