I've been reading a lot about this before I start...
I have a small room that has 3 sides interior walls and one cinder block partially underground wall (can look out window to garden).
I'll have wood 2x4's 16" centre
I want sound proof Roxul in the ceiling joists to cut noise and also on one wall cause a well pump is on the other side, (I guess I'll continue on other 2 interiors with same Roxul)
The one exterior cinder block wall is where the more concern is:
-Correct me if I'm wrong but I HAVE to use rigid insulation and NOT batt type right?
-As well I read that I have to have a VB between the cinder block wall and the 2x4 wood studs. And that this VB has to skirt under the bottom 2x4 plate as well as over top?
-So I will have Cinder block Exterior wall/ VB/ Rigid board/ drywall correct?
-What do I use as VB?
Hi. You are correct. Remember VB on the warm side. 4 to 6 mil. VB is best. The thicker the better and tape all joints with tuck tape and use accoustical sealant on top and bottom 2x4s.
First, is the cinder blocks dry all year round? If not then it's a different situation. Assuming there dry, then you do not have to use rigid insulation. Although it's a better system when used behind the 2x4 wall. It creates a thermal break from the cold blocks. The vapour barrier has to be on THE WARM SIDE of the wall, which is just behind the drywall. Not on the cinder blocks as it will just trap moisture inside the wall. If your worried about possible moisture from the blocks then use house wrap on the cinder blocks behind the wall. House wrap is waterproof but still allows the blocks to breath if they get wet or damp. I think what you are referring to is that wood should not be in direct with concrete. Which is handled simply by place plastic sheeting under neath the wall, it doesn't have to wrap all the way around.
