I am finishing my partially finished basement in Ontario. The walls currently have black paper on foundation walls then a 2 x3 studded wall 1 away from foundation, 24 on centre, with R12 batt insulation in between and vapour barrier . Can I keep the existing walls as is and drywall them? I have applied for a permit but there was no information about This in the application package. I understand that removing everything and starting fresh with 2x6 framing and R20 insulation is best practice but I need to finish the space on a minimal budget (5kids in University LOL) thanks for you help !!
Hi Tracy if you have a permit for this project, insulation and vapour barrier is usually a phase of inspection. I'd take pics and forward them to your inspector to see if it's ok.
R 12 is plenty of insulation onbasement wall but you could add a 2x2 on every stud to allow air space be hind the insulation
Hi Tracey,
This is the link to understand some of the options to correctly insulate your basement.

If unsure call the building department for your city.
