Bathroom tile Reno. When removing a tile border from around the shower/tub a section of drywall was damaged leaving about an inch by inch section on the top with just the drywall paper (where the wall meets the new tile). The contractor said he just needs to mud it and it will be fine. Not more then 24hours later it has cracked and separated. Contractor says it just needs more mud, and no water will get in. If this correct or should he have used a fibre tape to fix the damaged spot? See pics.

Your pictures aren't exactly clear about where the issue is. Based on what I see and what has happened with the drywall mud I would say that another coat of mud should resolve the issue. It does not appear that mud was applied over a hole where the mud would depress (no support) and then once dry it would crack. As I said, I don't see that. However, clearer pictures may tell a different story.

Thanks Tim, i have attached closer photos. There is no support in that spot. When you apply light pressure it just feels like paper.

Hi , There are a few types of DRYWALL that are perfect matches for any breadboard and cement board .Regular DRYWALL can be used As base for tiles in shower but only as an absolute last resort.Even in the best of scenarios the Tile and grout will eventually wear down.leving behind a clear route for water to sleep through an soak into the DRYWALL then a water barrier must be in steed behind the DRYWALL and the wall frames .this is done to help prevent water from damaging the structure of the integrity of the Tile as water will disintegrate the DRYWALL.

Hi Marco, it is not clear what your problem really is. I see a section where a strip of drywall or backer of some kind will be installed and a cracked patch along the top of the tub? If you are using a pro then all of this will be a base for the waterproofing system and then finishing material so it only needs to be sound. If the drywall is your finish then it really doesn't matter as it will definitely fail. You are obviously only at the beginning of the process.

You should probably ask your contractor what system he is using to get to the final product and not worry about micro managing each step. You need to have a better discussion with him or her.

Good luck with it.
