Trying to figure out what to do with our mothers home. (She has passed on).
The house needs a lot of work. Foundation work- as we have water that comes in, sometimes under front door. You have to step down one step to enter house. Your then have a set of stairs directly in front of you heading up, while still at bottom of stairs. to your right is the living room, to the left of the stairs is the kitchen. Behind the livingroom and kitchen is what we call the backroom, which is where the furnace, hotwater heater, pump, and electrical box and sump pump. Upstairs is 3 bedrooms and a bathroom, the laundry hook up is upstairs at the end of the hall, beside bathroom.
What I'm looking to do is stop the water coming in and move the kitchen and livingroom upstairs, and one of the bedrooms down, and turning the old livingroom into a rec room. Plus close off old door and put two new doors at either end of hallway. Right now there is only the one door in\out of house.
What I need is for 3-4 contractors to come in and give a FREE estimate to the costs of it , and rather or not the work could be done, and time length.
Thank You,
Elizabeth
Elizabeth,
I would suggest I different approach. Find who the best contractors are in your area who do large scale renovations, perhaps by checking with the local builders association. Then offer to pay a contractor a reasonable amount to come in an give the home a thorough inspection, and ask them to give you an estimate for the various parts that need to be addressed. Your project is complex, and a proper assessment and estimate will take many hours to prepare.
Most contractors who come in to give you a free estimate will only take a superficial look at the work. You will likely get estimates ranging from $30,000 to over $100,000, so which one is right? The free estimate approach will attract contractors who are trying to get their foot in the door and sell.
A fee for service approach will get you an unbiased assessment without the sales pitch, and more likely to yield valuable information which you can base your decisions on.
Hi Elizabeth,
You should post your inquiry in the "post your project" section of the website. You will get quotes from contractors in your area.
Hope this helps.
