Frost on New Double Pane Windows

I have a 4yr old home with double pane Pella windows. I'm the only one on the block that gets ice on the inside of my windows when temps drop to single digits. My humidity is set at 30%. Is this due to poorly installed windows? It happened last year and i thought my humidity was too high at 35%. After asking all neighbors, no one else has this problem.

is it happening to all windows?

usually the ice on windows its because there is not enough ventilation in the house.

you can try put small fan on one of the windows to see if thats the problem !

thank you

Hi Dave

This could be a simple as window blinds or curtains , there should be a heat vent under the each window , or close by each window.

If you have the windows all covered up not allowing the airflow to get to the window would be the main cause of the humidity build up that freezes on the windows.

However

If that is not the cause , then the next thing it can be is the windows themselves,

I have seen windows that are faulty from the manufacture , that have two or more windows

That was grouped into one unit , but the seams in between the windows were never sealed properly.

I would ask the builder to send out the window Rep to check the windows,

The finally if that isn't the problem, then I would look at the way the building envelope was sealed,

The stucco or siding on the house would need to

Be opened in some locations to look at the way they sealed up the house wrap or building paper on the wall ,

A bad overlap on the building paper would allow

Water and moisture into the structure of the home, and freeze in the winter .

Best of luck

Paulo

Seems like some good comments already, but yes, could be lack of heat, ventilation or incomplete air barrier.

Definitely start with a review with the manufacturer's window rep. & contractor.

Hello!

Here's a process of troubleshooting:

1) Check for condensation or frost in between the panes. If there is, then the argon fill seal is broken and your window might be covered under warranty.

2) If there isn't any, then check by feel to see if the wall under the window is cold (properly insulated) look for areas near plugs for cold air. Also, the heat register is another possible culprit of course and that was mentioned BUT that leads more into #3.

3) If none of those cases are present then more than likely you have a humidity problem and poor air flow. Also as mentioned, that can be caused by blinds, curtains and an unintentional "passive solar/heating effect." I suspect your humidity is too high given your airflow. Check your bathroom fans too...Have some fish tanks?

4) Try opening all your vents for a while, enough that your furnace is working to heat each room consistently, grab a $30 surface temperature gun or digital thermostat and check to see if your rooms of a single story are all the same temperature, then check the room with the window. (might as well point the surface detector at the wall and check a reading for #2 relative to other walls.)

5) In some cases, the perimeter of a window installation can be prone to being poorly insulated: either lack of acoustical sealant on the V.B., or no insulation between the window and the rough opening. Could pop the casings off and check, maybe spray some low expansion spray foam in any gaps.

Hope that helps!
