So we are thinking of getting a detached Garage installed in our back yard. We have the room and would like to with 10' ceilings and 22 feet wide by 14 long. We were quoted initially $32000, but later with a little adjustment because we initially wanted storage space in the attic so the would require a ladder and frame off in the rafters. The contractor lowered the cost to $27000 to save on costs. This still seems really steep seeing as this is a rough garage with out any power or gas.
In some ways you may be correct. However, does this also include a concrete pad (with excavation and perhaps pilings? The base work can be costly. The rest of it should be fairly straight forward. To get a good idea of material cost, take your measurements to two or three suppliers (Home Depot, Rona, Home Hardware) and do a comparison. Labour can vary, but again ask the questions on "how long should it take to put up"? Doing some math should provide a reasonable estimation of time and related cost.
Hope this helps.
A very basic way to estimate the cost of building a detached garage is to simply apply a typical average per square foot construction of $80 - $100. If there are complications or you prefer top quality materials and components the price can easily will go up. This can serve as a very rough basis.
Everything will depend on the materials prices and labor expenses. Installation of cement siding and a slate roof might double the cost in comparison with vinyl siding and an asphalt shingles roof. If it is an attached garage and house design will require matching in style, costs of construction will increase as well.
