We currently have a gas assist wood burning fireplace and are going to replace it with a gas fireplace. Would the venting be better through the existing chimney (2 story building) or straight out the wall? Why?
As long as you put a liner in the chimney, venting through there is fine. Usually the biggest difference in my experience between the two is that there are usually more options and units available that vent directly outdoors. Direct vent is also a much shorter vent which means it could have less issues over time. Regardless, as long as the chimney is lined properly with a proper vent, it can still be done up to code through there.
