I am sure that I would have a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) in my house.
VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION:
How do I locate it and how do I test it to ensure that the GFCI works?
How do they look like? Could a builder/electrician send a picture of a TYPICAL
GFCI to me?
How many GFCI are there in a 2 level 11 year old house?
Thanks

Should be 2 minimum in the home. 1 for exterior, 1 for protecting all bathroom sinks.
Hi Martin,
Attached is a picture of a GFCI receptacle. They are located in bathroom areas, outdoor areas and in kitchen areas. GFCI is required when the distance of an outlet to a water source like kitchen sink is less than 1.5 meters. Test it by pressing the test button to turn of the outlet and press the reset button to turn it back on. The GFCI protection can either be a receptacle or a circuit breaker.

Ive attached a picture of what a GFCI outlet looks like. They are typically found in your bathrooms and the exterior of your house. If you push the test button you should hear a click and the outlet will stop supplying power. If so, it is functioning correctly. Push the reset button and it is back to normal.
11 year old home does not require kitchen gfci's. code was not in place for that location then.
You probably have the receptacles like already posted (for any receptacles near a sink) or its possible that you have a GFCI circuit breaker located in the panel (will have a similar test/reset button as the receptacles)
Hope this helps! =)
