Guarantees only provided after (by mail) my final payment. Is this acceptable?

My current contractor (bathroom renovation) will only provide guarantees after I give him final payment. I am skeptical on this procedure since previous contractors I have dealt with provide this at the same time of final payment. Is this acceptable?

A contractor should stand behind their work regardless of whether final payment has been made or not.

Have never heard of such a thing.

As far as I'm concerned I always put my guarantee on the written contract when the client sign so they have it at the beginning of the process. I would just demand your contractor to give you a warranty in writing before you pay him final payment. He should not have a problem with that and if he does it doesn't sound right. Good luck

Then pay the contractor his money. Why do some of you guys like make it hard for contractors. Some of you home on Earth like lots of trouble now a days all of you guys take it for a habit takeingcontractors as little kids

Of course, it would be better for you to receive a guarantee sheet at the same time as the last payment.

Well, that sounds weird that you can't trust your contractor.

Update:

I visited my contractor and he finally agreed to give me my written guarantees once I showed him what another company prepared on final payment. You must insist and I would even look for this when signing the contract.

I like Jeff's response thank you

I will be looking forward to seeing that document next week.

The response from the person that says just pay ... well that's not very professional on his part

No it's not acceptable. The guarantee must be in the contract. If your paying cash good luck getting anything guaranteed.

The guarantee should be part of the contract. When the contract is completed on both parties (customer payed in full and the contractor finishes the work) then it should be active because that concludes the contract. Just let him know that you would feel more comfortable having the guarantee in your hands upon payment. Especially if it was outlined in the contract and is part of what you are paying for.
