How far my fence has to be away from the curb?

I m in Ottawa and my house is at the corner lot. I am building a fence on the left side my house that is 10 feet away from the curb to allow visibility of the traffic. I did some research and the city regulation says 10 feet away from the curb. Can any one tell me if this is correct. Please help.

I am digging the hole 4' feet down and 10" dia, setting with gravel on the bottom for 0.5' feet for drainage. Set the pressure treated wood into the sonotube, pour 3 feet concrete mix and top up with soil. Any better method.

Kindly advise.

Tks.

In our experience different municipalities have different rules, and I would recommend you request the city by law office visit the house and advise. As for safety call Ontario one call to request where all your services are buried, when you are digging hopefully you won't hit a service line.

You have not mentioned the height, and a 10 inch hole is usually sufficient for a 4X4 post and we have never used sonotubes in this application, as long as your soil maintains its density while you set the posts.

Your fill method sounds very good but if you can flare out the bottom of the hole this will help keep the posts from moving. We have a client that has had a fence consisting of 76 sections of 4X4 @ 5 ft height for almost 30 years and the fence has not shifted.

Another method is to simply refill the hole with the removed soil as most farm fences. This requires a good tampering usually with a 2X4 while keeping the post plumb. This method is not for the novice.

Best of Luck.

Put a call into municipality office to be sure. Some places will allow you to step down your fence to lower heights.

As far as setting, don't waste money on sonotubes and do NOT bring concrete to the top of the hole. I usually add 1 bag of concrete in the bottom to create a solid anchor. You can then backfill with either limestone or crusher run. Do NOT backfill with dirt. The top few inches of soil are rich with enzymes, bacteria and micro-organisms that are responsible for breaking down twigs/leaves, etc. This will prematurely rot your posts at grade. Hydro/telephone poles are set with screenings, because they compact as hard as concrete, are immune to frost heave, drain freely, and are easy to replace if the post ever needs to be replaced.
