Hi,

I have a question about interior spray painting. How many coats of paint do most companies do? We are using behr paint on new drywall. 1 coat primer right and is it 1 coat paint or 2?

Thanks,

Kendra

Hi Kendra,

I always recommend applying two coats in most situations, but it can vary with every situation.

I always recommend minimum one coat primer two coats of paint for:

- New or bare drywall, wood, metal etc.

- Any colour changes

- Exterior coatings

No primer, just one coat of premium paint

- Fresh coat on previously painted surface with the same colour

- Very subtle colour change

Hi Kendra,

Great question.

Typically with a new color I do two coats.

There are a few factors that will allow just one coat. One, the Behr product is a great paint with excellent coverage. Also, it has primer in it as well which aids in great coverage.

If you are wanting to do one, apply the paint a little heavier than a normal first coat. Allow appropriate drying time and then asses if the walls need a second coat.

Hope that helps. Happy painting!

Hello Kendra, hope you're well.

It's always best to do two coats of paint, no two ways about it. Two coats will always cover fully and with the proper depth' of view. In any application of just about any coating, two coats is best practice. However if you're using a high quality paint and you are satisfied with the coverage from one coat, then great. Less time and less money (not that much less money really in the scope of it all) and you like it, it's a win. If you're living and staying there then do it with no regrets for later. If selling, do it good but not crazy good bcs it will always look great with a fresh coat of paint and may get changed anyways. God bless

Hi Kendra

Yes , 2 coats would be the norm. If your changing colors dramatically a tinted primer

would be advised and then 2 coats.

If your just freshening up the existing color

you could probably just get away with the one coat. Some paints have better coverage then others. Usually you get what you pay for.

Hi Kendra,

Primer plus 2 finish coats is best. Same for trim.

Hi Kendra,

Usually any painter will roll and cut any wall spraying walls we usually do if we have an open area.

But yes one coat primer two coat finish.

We always Prime new drywall with primer sealer. We paint the walls and ceilings two coats minimum. Some colors with dark pigments and yellows can take three coats. If you're painting over dark colors prime it first as well. Hope this helps you out

Hi Kendra.

I would suggest that you apply multiple thin coats of paint, instead of one or two thick coats for the best finish. Two is almost always sufficient once the drywall is primed. Note that if you are using reds or yellows. you will need either a tinted primer or else you may end up having to do up to 4 coats. It is best to ask at the paint store about these colors and what they suggest.

Hope that helps

Thanks

I also recommend 2 coats on top of primer.

A lot of light (white) coloured paint you can get one good coat and one thin coat.

Always use a good quality paint. Behr makes many levels. When you use a higher quality it will pay off when painting and even wiping walls afterward.

Hi Kendra,

After primer,

Rolling (covering ): you should apply 2 coat of paint by roller because paint will cover better than 1 coat

Spray (Running paint): to reduce paint running, spray light 1st time and spray light 2nd time
