How to connect a kitchen duct to microwave?

I am installing 40" cabinets for my kitchen renovation. As shown in the picture, the opening of the duct to the outside meets the bottom of the cabinet. This duct needs to connect to the microwave in the picture, but the current tubing is too long and comes up about 1/4 of the way up the diameter of the duct opening to the outside.

My idea was to cut the opening lip and install a reducer to go to a 4" diameter to allow for clearance, but I would like to know if there are any other ideas out there.

Other options considered are getting a microwave with a charcoal filter or moving the duct opening (not really wanting to do that one though!)

Hi Sam. Any progress on the microwave range hood install? You maybe able to use a round duct plate adapter and the attach a round damper to it. That will save you considerable space and should be enough to be able to make the connection to the current duct. I wouldn't reduce the ducting to anything smaller than the manufacturer's recommendations.

Here are the links for the items I mentioned. I could only find in 7" diameter, which seems to be standard size.

The other thought I had, was to go straight up through the ceiling, into the attic and through the roof. Obviously that will only work if you have a bungalow type house.

Good luck.

Steve.

Hi Steve,

Not a bungalow unfortuntely ;)

We looked at where the bottom of the duct and it was actually 1/8" below the cabinet. Had we put in a 30" cabinet (rather than a 20") it would have allowed for the duct, but would have created a 17" gap between the stove and microwave which is too small. We ended up deciding on a recirculating microwave.

If, in the future, we decide to sell we may just figure out a way to move the duct, but for now the recirculating option is best as we don't do much greasy cooking anyhow.

Hi:)

I have exactly the same issue. I'm just in the process of having my kitchen renovated and I was very interested in getting an over the range microwave. I did my own research and compared some good brands here . As I have a limited space, I'm going to put a microwave over the top of a range hood.
