We have a cottage that was is sitting on the ground. The foundation due to moisture is starting to rot in places. We need to raise the cottage to repair the damage and build supports under it.

How do I go about finding a contractor to do this type of work?

Finding qualified and reliable contractors in cottage country is difficult. I would start with your local building department, you are going to have to deal with them anyway for permits, and they might be able to recomend someone or at least piont you in the right direction.

Hi Tammy, If the building department can't help you out, you could put your requirements in the "post your project" section and hopefully get some local guys to respond. You are probably going to need a structural engineer as well to do an inspection and give you some permanent solutions. Plans and permits will also be required.

Good Luck with it!

Hi Tammy,

Well going through your Handy Canadian directory would be the first place to start, if that fails try using Google, BING etc... type in what your looking for ie: house lifting or house moving or rot repair contractor ( type in your location) are usually good places to start.

Then use the Hartwig Builders contractor check list.. P.I.R.Q : Portfolio: past work pic.s , Insurance: ask if the company has the necessary insurance, References: and affiliations with other companies that they are with and their standings ,and lastly Questions: ask questions big or small to make you feel comfortable and secure with your project and contractor.

Listing your main concerns in order of importance for you ie: Quality, Price, Time Constraints etc.. and make sure that you are comfortable and understand your contract.

Remember it's YOUR project and YOUR the boss ....so be informed as much as possible, communication is paramount for any successful renovation/project so you fully understand and are comfortable with your renovation/project.

Hope I've helped.

Thank You
