Current hood does not look like it is vented, need to go through roof. This is a older middle unit in a townhouse complex ( 1994). Who would I hire to do this type of work, have not purchased the hood unit yet, want to know how much construction costs would be to do this.

Hi Diane,

Depending distance and if there is a clear path, yes you can vent directly to the roof.

In most cases you can install stove exhaust vent from current location going to the side of your unit i.e. towards external window. please investigate your kitchen if there is a possible path toward side of your unit. send me photo of your exhaust showing entire kitchen to info@handy-marcy.ca to have initial estimation.

I have done dozens of these, you want a "good general contractor" the vent has to be min 4" and should be a vent pipe in the "run". If able to go through roof this is best and the vent hood must be 4 feet from ridge, do not install lower unless only place to put it. Always elbow it inside the roof a little due to condensation running straight down and out the range hood, you also will insulate this pipe as well (these are common mistakes "amatuers make")...if cannot go through roof you can also vent it out a side wall in kitchen by running it in the corner of an adjoining joint of roof and wall, or through/over top cabinets and build a "bulkhead" to cover it of drywall or wood, the same sizing applies and while insulation is not as important as its in the room it will not hurt. As well, insure all vents have a flap and are well caulked where they pierce the walls/roof. Usual cost for most installs are from $1,200-$1,800
