I want to install a switch to an existing "pull chain Light" but there is a single box already there

operating a porch light. Can I disconnect the existing wires to install a double switch box? I haven't got my rough in permit yet and I'm positive the porch light is wired to other things I need to keep power supplied to so I can't live with the breaker off till the inspection is done and I doubt re-wiring the switch into a double box and pretending it was like that when we bought the house would fly :)

I don't see this site as DIY homeowners hack, tips and tricks how to wire your house. This is probably 15-30 min work professional electrician and you'll have your peace of mind. Doing electrical by yourself can jeopardize your insurance if something happens. Why people don't do their gas lines? Because it might be dangerous. So it is electrical and plumbing as well. It can cause damage if it is not done properly. Call certified electrician, pay some money and relax.

Please call a license electrical contractor to do the job for you . Don't try play with electrical if you don't know it , because a small mistake can cause death and disaster .

Wiring is complicated and can certainly lead to more costs trying to repair DIY jobs.

The simple answer is to call a LICENSED contractor and get their on-site opinion and assistance.

You already mentioned a permit so it seems you want to head in the right direction, if your permit and inspection allows you to change wiring (single family dwelling people can change their electrical providing they get a permit, but multi family housing owners cannot do their own electrical repairs, ever).

Adding a switch to your pull chain is not adding a device load to your count, so yes you can do that with a permit, changing the box is the best way to add it. If there are children around, the electrical cannot be accessible to them at all so you'll need to make it safe while you wait for the inspection.
