Hello,

I have purchased black quartz countertops and black quartz backsplash from a kitchen cabinet and countertop store. I have paid them 85% of the money and on the day of installation when they were supposed to install the countertops

I have noticed that those countertops have visible marks from the cutting machine on the edges as well as the waterfall edge of the countertop was chipped. I have refused this product to be installed as I have considered it to be damaged -the store does not want to refund me money for the countertops as they said this is normal for black quartz to have visible marks from the cutting machine. They offered me to seal it with some substance on site but I had a friend with me that told me not to agree to this because it is most likely temporary solution and the scratches will come out after couple of weeks. In their showroom none of the samples had those marks and they never informed me that might be the case with black quartz that I was buying.

Is this normal? Does all black quartz have marks from the cutting machine?

It's poor workmanship. They should have screen it after they cut and sealed properly.

Dear Lena,

Dark quartz are more difficult to maintain and clean than lighter colours. We do not recommend dark quartz to our customers because it stains easily and difficult to clean and repair. Dark granite is a far better option. We typically ask our customer to sign a waiver. Your subcontractor could apply an edger to mask the lines. If you can feel the marks, this is not normal. If they are marks of rubber clamps or suction cups or pads from the manufacturing plant, it is unfortunately common.

Hope this helps.

Looks like poorly done cutting to be sure, either a mistake or amateur did it. I have encountered this before, if they cannot fix it? a reputable supplier will have it replaced, may take weeks or more to get a new piece and may not be exact same pattern as rest but it is up to your supplier to provide customer satisfaction, I would not take less. Get it in writing if they will only repair & is not successful they agree to replace it maybe? You also paid way to high for a deposit average is 50% max

Whoever cut had a bad blade. Same thing happens to wood when the blades tired
