Maximum spans for steel beams supporting floors in dwelling units

Hello,

I just need help comprehending this chart from the OBC (BUILDING CODES) BOOK. Im confused about the rows containing the lengths. Which row(s) is the beam span and which row is the supported joist length?

Table 9.23.4.3

Left Column is the Steel Section

First row is the Name of the row below it

That is 2.4,3.0,etc This is the support joist length (Half the sum of the joist spans on both sides of the beam

The numbers in the body are the lenghts of the beams.
