I'm framing a short, shelf-topped dividing wall between my kitchen and sunken den. There is a 12" difference in elevation from the kitchen floor down to the den floor. What is the minimum height I can make this wall?
I believe the shortest distance you can make a railing or a wall would be 36 in and this would be from the higher elevation and then up 36 from there.
If you went 42in you're definitely good to go.
To double-check 100% just call your local municipality and ask them what the code is they do very.
This is the 2014 Code; I believe the current (2019) Code is same.
A guard is not required if the difference in elevation between the walking surface and the adjacent surface is less than 600 mm (24").
I guess it would be common sense not to build a wall 6" high if it could become a trip hazard; however no wall would be permitted.
In situations where a guard is required (over 24") the minimum guard height is 900 mm (36").
If I understand correctly, you want a short wall to prevent people or pets from accidentally stepping down to the den. Treat it as a deck with a suggested height of 36" to 42". You could also install a railing is place of a solid wall, if you want a more open "feel". Any thing over a 24" should have a guard.
