Removal of old windows brick to brick and installation of new windows. Do the window installers/contractors require any building permits from the town or special licensing?
No. If there are any structural changes, i.e a larger window, then yes.
They do not require a permit if the the new window can make use of the untouched existing structure. ie the studs, jack studs and header are not compromised. If the window is larger and studs are removed the header will need to be replaced and a permit will be required.
Changing out a window is basically considered maintenance so no as long as you don't make any structural changes.
I'm pretty sure if you are not doing an addition, just removing and replacing, you don't need a permit. But to be safe in your area just ask at the council bldg.
