I have a 200amp stabloc panel in my basement and need to add a sub panel as I am installing a propane heater for my pool and my current panel is full. What are the regulations as to where the new panel can go? I was hoping to put it in my garage attached to chipboard not too far from my existing panel.

Hi Lisa,

It's fine to install the sub panel.

Regard,

Sam

Electrical code says that panels can't be installed in stairwells, clothes closets, or any other undesirable place. If you wanted to mount it outdoors it needs to be outdoor rated.

Long story short there isn't many places that aren't allowed. Next to your main panel is fine.
