I saw lots of video on Youtube. They show how to remove load bearing wall between kitchen and living room on the main floor. If I install a beam and 2 poles sit on 2 joists is it safe for my house? Should I install another beam in the basement to support those joists?

Whenever someone is thinking of doing structural changes to there homes, it is a good idea to consult an Enginner. They can calculate the loads and recommend the right beam and saddles to suport the wall being removed.

If you plan to hire a contractor, make sure he is licences and has done this type of work in the past.

No, do not do what you are thinking of doing.

Yes it may cost you about $ 500 to get a Engineer to come and tell you exactly the size of beam you require for your span. You may be able to get away with a built up wood beam ( you can build yourself ) or you may have to get a metal beam , this depends on your head room and depth of beam you require.

Normally you would build two 2 x 4 false walls

on either side of the baring wall before you remove anything.

This kind of work sometimes it seems simple however it is very important and technical and has to be handled with people that has a proper structure experience and the contractor has to have the expertise to perform such job and an engineer should be involve to give you the right sizes of the beams, posts where these posts will stand on, drawings in case you need to go with the city permit,....etc

You first need to see how your roof is framed if it's pre-engineered roof trusses or hand framed rafters. Is there a second floor above where the beam is going or the roof. Have a professional contractor/Carpenter look at your project to determine if you need an engineer stamp as well to determine if you need to carry the point load to the basement and add additional footing below the concrete floor. Always best to have an engineer look at your structual it's well worth it.

Where ever your posts are going you need to block the joists from underneath. If you don't the weight will go right there the floor.
