I have a permanent roof installed a few years ago. The installation was done over top of the original asphalt shingles. The other day I was checking on the eavestroughs and found out when tapping on the roof, water was seeping out of the edge. This means that that water has entered between the metal roof shingles and the asphalt shingles underneath. Is this normal? So far there is no evidence of water entering the attic. Should I still be concerned about this?
I would certainly still be concerned. Your metal roofing system that was recently installed should not have water seeping between the old roof and the new roof. I would recommend having your roofing contractor come back out to identify where the water is coming through. It might just be something minor but if you leave it for an extended period of time it could become a more serious problem.
I checked a neighbour's house that had a permanent roof installed recently by a different contractor than mine and saw the same thing. Tapped a stick on the roof and saw water seeping out into the eavestrough. This is after a period of about a week of rain showers everyday and very little sunshine. The contractor did put in caulking between the roof and the adjacent wall.
