Poor quality and workmanship

I've hired a contractor to put up a fence. The quality and workmanship is terrible and I'm not very happy with it. No contract was drawn up, a quote was agreed on via text. I have not paid him anything yet and he is about 3/4 way through the job.

I want to fire him and find someone else. Thing is it will likely cost more to repair the work he's done. What should I do? Should I even pay him?

Henry,

Text messages can be used as a form of contract these days and proof of agreed upon prices and work scope.

You can't fire them without paying a cent because they can turn around and place a lien on your property which is more of a headache.

You have 2 options:

1) inform them you are unhappy with what they have done so far. Give them a chance to fix it or

2) agree on a settlement price for work and materials they have done so far and find someone else to fix and finish.

There is a saying in the industry:

Great work ain't cheap and cheap work ain't great!

Yes my advice is about the same.

Tell the contractor that you are un happy with the work( put it in writing via email and hard copy). Let them have a chance to fix it.

If you are still unhappy at the end of the job make sure you let them know in writting. If they still wont fix the issues bring in good fencing companies to give you quotes to fix the fence and make a report for you declaring all the problems with the fence. This will help you if you need evidence to prove your case.

Have you told the contractor how you feel about the work he's done and given him the opportunity to correct it? who covered the cost of materials?

Can I ask if he was the lowest price from the quotes you got?

And I agree with above replys. Ive seen it happen where customers refuse to pay and the contractor place a lein on the home. Then you have to cover the lawyer costs on top of the work the contractor did so you need to settle with him for what's been done and hire someone else to repair or redo the fence.

Either way this is going to cost you more than you wanted to spend to have the fence done.
