Pre-hung door install by contractor

Hi,

Had basement contractor install interior basement pre-hung doors yesterday but to save some cost, I said I'd be willing to install the trim/casement myself.

I have 2 doors with large gaps and not flushed with drywall.

Was this done properly? Any suggestions how I can add small board to close off the gaps and level with drywall?

Casement I got was 3.5" width trims from local box store. I'm a novice/beginner and wondering how should I go about installing a tricky setup like this.

Thanks.

J

Looks like larger doors should have been used. To fill the gap u have to add some drywall and finish it.

Hi J,

You will need to add drywall to fill the gap. Which you will most likely have to mud and tape.

You maybe, able to get away with just adding the drywall and caulking the moulding, if the moulding is close to covering where the drywall joint meets.

Also, you should reinforce the blocking that's there between the door jamb and framing. Doesn't look like enough there to properly support the jambs.

The 1st picture with the drywall behind the jamb is done totally wrong. You won't be able to get much more than 1" of trim on the inside from what I can see.

You should let the contractor handle the headache he created.

Thanks.

Steve.

Thanks all.

My contractor guy hasn't been easy to approach for any rework, in a way, I can understand but he vouches for his work.

I have larger gaps above the door, nothing supporting the door frame. Another He initially put 36" doors for powder room and I said it looks too large. This is after drywall and he said no problem.

This is not what I had in mind when he installed it.

1 of the door is extra, included in original invoice. I don't think I should have to pay for the labor for install if he leaves it like this.

This is a great example of why home owners should not get involved in doing the work themselves. Also never EVER pay any money until the job is done 100% and you have a chance to look it over.
