Hello,
We live in a 20 year old home in Newmarket Ontario and we would like to upgrade all of our sockets and switches with a newer style. We currently have toggle switches and would like to switch to decora switches and sockets. We have about 30 or so and we are wondering what we should be looking to spend for this service?
Thank you kindly for your advice.
We do it for 20$ each, labour and material included. GFI in a bathrooms are $40 each.
Hello Sandra,
This kind of work is not for everyone so be sure to hire a licensed electrician and check their credentials. Any competent electrician will carry their license with them. If they cannot show it, don't let them do your electrical work. This work does not require a Licensed Electrical Contractor, nor any permit, but do not allow handymen or DIY's to do the work. not saying the work is hard, but if the connections are weak or not under the screw terminals, they wont be as secure as they could be. A licensed contractor could charge from $20-$30 per device. I only assume by the age of your home it does not have aluminum wiring (some older parts of the home could if in the era of 1965-80), in which case it must be done by a LEC and have a permit attached to the work. extra fees would apply.
One of the factors you need to consider when asking for prices in this type of work is the requirement to move furniture and appliances.
Some people will charge a price based on "open access" while others will charge a premium for the requirement to move or work around stuff.
I think $20-$30 for open access is a good price, if the men need to start moving furniture then look for increased prices.
Cheers
