The house we are buying has forced air oil but would prefer forced air propane as we understand we can hook that up to fireplace, stovetop, on demand water heater etc but wonder roughly the cost of conversion and ongoing usage costs for 3 adults and 4 young children?
First you will need to get in contact with the local gas company to request a new service to your home. The company will be able to provide you with a proposal for the cost of the work to be completed (running new line to your house and installing meter).
To remove the existing oil furnace there are several steps you will have to take. You will need to get in contact with a local company to dispose of the existing oil in the tank. Once the oil is removed you will need to dispose the tank which will be approx. $500-$800. A new gas furnance and air condition will need to be installed (approx $8,000 - $9000). The existing oil furnance and AC will have to be disposed.
Hello Joanne,
Your current furnace would have to be replaced to accommodate a propane fuel source. This typically costs about $5,000-$8,000 depending on furnace brand and required rough ins. With that being said, you would need to contact a gas company to install and fill propane tanks. These tanks have specific spacing requirement's from exhausts and spark generating items such as generators and AC units. New tanks are approximately 2-3 thousand to be supplied and installed. This does not include interior gas lines to your desired fixtures. Expect a cost of approximately $400-$600 per gas line needed.
As far as usage rates, this varies greatly. I built a custom home last year that was heated off propane and the client has to fill his tanks approximately every 3-4 months and this costs roughly $500 for their 500 gallon tank. This is a Net Zero home so it is very efficient, this cost would most likely be more for a older built home. This price fluctuates with the market value of propane at the time of supply.
I hope this helps.
