I have been obtaining quotes from painters to paint the entire inside of my condo.
I have been working with a large flooring store to purchase flooring, plus installation for same. Price wise, things are looking good and I'm ready to move ahead for the painting, and then the flooring.
My problem is insurance. I want confirmation of WSIB and liability insurance before contractors begin the work. I'm met with blank stares on this one and ridiculous claims, such as we've never had an accident, all my work is guaranteed. What are the magic words to say to these people so they understand what I'm looking for. If they don't have WSIB and liability insurance, that means I'm financially responsible if they have an accident or there's negligence.
You are correct Laurie you could be held financial responsible if there were an accident/injury on your property.
Check for WSIB status of a company here at this link - https://eservices.wsib.on.ca/portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_203_650_245_71889_43/eclearance/FBStart.action
For company liability insurance ask for a copy of their certificate of policy number.
Ask them to supply this information when they submit their quote to you.

Hello Laurie,
If the contractors doing work at your place don't have insurance or wsib it will be your responsibility god forgives something happened in your house if they fall leave an opened faucet or break a valuable item at your place will be yours as a house owner responsible because you hire contractors that are not covered we have been in the business for 20 years and always carry our liability insurance for 5000000 dollars now and wsib.
Contractors that don't have wsib or insurance are not covered and unfortunately they show that they may not be as professional reliable and experienced as now in these days everyone that is taking their business seriously should have both insurances bottom line is piece of mind for you specially if they can't provide you with any coverage tell them that you have to go with another company that is covered no thank you very much you will be released of any responsibility when you choose a professional contractor.
Good luck. Have a great day.

Thank you for the responses. That wsib link is very helpful and confirmed that one of the contenders is not covered, although he states he is.
Hi
My 30 years of experience has taught me that people in the up and up and with proper WSIB AND LIABILITY VKEARANCE are happy and proud to present it as it makes them feel above the crowd. Anyone who finds your request amusing or puzzling is not the contractor for your project.
We put our insurance and WSIB and hst information on our contract and provide a contractual written one year warranty for all the projects be it a powder room or an entire condominium project.
