I am wondering what's out there for estimating and quoting software for reno jobs, small and large.
Thanks
Craig,
Be cautions about the software you are seeking. There are basic formulas but none that are fool proof. If you are expecting something that you could just insert a few measurements and vola the answer, don't hold your breath. What I have done is made my own on excel and update it every so often. I've made one for roofs, decks, stairs, cement work, drywall, and some others. Basically, once you have done some jobs you would have a fairly good idea on how long it takes and what issues might be involved. Build your estimating plan from that. You can also slot in current material costs ... from your local supplier. Software (usually from the USA) doesn't include material costs because they vary from different parts of the country (Canada & US).
Again, use your experience and go a little on the high side. Also, BIG THING!!! ... use the word ESTIMATE, not quote. A quote suggests that the price is set, regardless of issues that you might uncover while an estimate gives you some room for error. I hope this helps.
The following is an example of a roofing estimate:
Roof size 1000 sq. ft. (500 on each side). = 32 bundles of shingles plus 3 extra for caping and miscuts.
Drip edge = perimeter divided by lengths of drip edge. 16 -10' lengths x $$.
Ice guard number of rolls (varies) ... let's say 2. 2 x $$
Vents. Number of vents x $$
Nails approx. 350 nails per square.
Caulking, etc.
Delivery and roof top delivery.
Labour. I charge a minimum equal to the costs of materials. Usually I charge double.
Good luck.
