I want to renovate my small bathroom and have no idea where to start. We'll need a designer. My husband will take it down to its bones. We want to enlarge the shower, heating in the floor, tiles on the floor and shower walls. We'll need electrical and plumbing done, vanity and toilet installed as well. A bench in the shower and a pocket shelf in the shower wall. To enlarge the shower, a closet on the other side will be removed. Will licenses be needed? Approximately how much would the range be? For now, I can't think of anything else. Thank you!
Let me ease you by saying this is a typical renovation. Tough to give a approx cost sight unseen. You should insist on only licensed professionals to do the work. If they are not, there is a reason. Pay now or pay more later, as they say. Code says you will require permits as well.
Good luck with your project.
Marilyn, I'm not sure about whether you need a permit or not as this isn't a major structural change. If you contact your local building association or a building inspector, they can answer that concern. Yes to the licensed person or people you hire. They know what they are doing and have set standards for quality and billing practices. As to the work, that would depend on how much space you have available, the location and ease of access to the plumbing and electrical. The quality of the shower and other items all have a factor to consider. I rough guess would be in the $15 to $20,000 mark for labour only. Hope this helps.
Hi it should be a problem for your remodel just get a few bathroom Specialists to look at your job there is only so much that can be done for you heated floor make sure it is 220 volt that will be cheaper on electrical bill any contractor you get make sure they have a good portfolio showers take on more water than a rain forest it has to be done right cost that's your choice I have done custom bathrooms from $7500 to 75,000k it's your back pocket not the contractors do your due diligence and everything will work out fine hope this helps
Basically you will need to apply for an interior redesign permit with your city. Simple but before you do tbat you need a plan. Draw out what you have showing dimensions and locations of toilet sink and closet location. Also show light and switch locations A fact to know, everything can be done but there's a cost, and yes you should get a designer as they will plot and plan all aspects of the project to minimize costs.
You designer will deal with permits. Price is about to how much you what to put in the Reno. From 7,000 dollars to couple millions. Price is about details, quality of material and what kind of trades you want to use. You can tell everyone how much money is your budget. They will quote for you. Be ready for some deals.

Hi Marilyn
Ripping out a old bathroom is always a fun and interesting job and quite satisfying if you want to do much of the work yourself. If this is a functional bathroom now , you should not require a permit for the work unless you are adding a extra fixture ( Tub
shower or toilet)to the existing. First remove
your toilet , sink and shower fixtures ( If you don't feel comfortable, have a plumber do them) Then gut the room. Have a Electrician do all your Electrical. Shop around and get references for a good contractor that can put in your in floor heating ( The Electrician
should make all the final connections )
Depending on the size of your room and finishes you want and how much you actually do yourself , your probably looking at between
$ 7,500 and $ 18,000
Advice is always free
Good luck
Hi, concerning renovating your bathroom 100%. Technically you need a building permit if you're removing any walls. You will need an electrical permit if your moving any of the electrical components as well a plumbing permit if you are relocating any water lines drains toilet Etc. I would suggest you call a reputable renovation company instead of an interior designer to save on costs however if you have extra money to do so it is a good idea. I'm not sure the square footage of your bathroom but if it is a regular 5 foot by 8 foot standard size and you're doing a hundred percent of the demolition I would approximately say $10,000 would be sufficient. This all depends on your fixtures you choose the tiles and so on. I do recommend you call a renovation company and get a free quote. Hope this helps a little bit. Jeff
