What would the round hole in my basement floor be for? It has wooden slats across it.
It's likely an access panel to a shut off/ clean out. possible rough in plumbing as well. If it's larger then it could be an open sump pit.
I would like to use this room as a closet since it is off my bedroom and separate from the furniture room.
Could I put laminate floor over it?
Floor drain / sump pump/ how big is the hole.
I have been trying to add this picture. It's 20.5 inches.
Thanks
Lindsay, that size of hole would be for a sump pump. If you look inside the hole, there should be a pipe or hole in the side that allows for excess water from you outside foundation to enter. A sump pump is meant to pump this extra water out of you house so the basement doesn't flood. It appears as though the hole is there but no pump. Better check into this with a local plumber.
I can see the photo now. I agree with Mark. Looks like a sump pit. If it doesn't work with your layout. They can be moved to different locations but can get costly.
Is the pit needed if there isn't a sub pump? Can I put laminate over it?
