A few years ago I took and turned a room in my basement into a home gym and placed rubber mating from the local fitness equipment supply company on the floor. In the process of expanding the area I discovered mold under the mats. Moisture has never been a problem. I removed carpeting from the adjacent room and found no mold. The mold appears to only under the center areas of the mats (at least 2 inches from the edges). The floor in this area was previously painted with epoxy floor paint when the room had another use.
What can I do to prep the floor (underlay etc.) to prevent this from happening in the future? Remembering the room is to be used as a weight room.
Brian,
I am not sure about the fix but here is what I think. The mats just didn't allow the flooring underneath to breathe so any condensation accumulated and caused the concern. It may not be mold, just water stains and you can purchase a spray to kill potential mold. What I'd suggest is to clean the area well, apply the spray and put some sort of web underlay under the mats to allow for some air circulation, keeping the area somewhat dryer.

Hey Brian,
The wetness is caused by the mositure in the concrete. If you do a search I believe the underlay used on laminate floors will work, move the mats for a bit to let them dry out, spray mild killer to be safe.
