Should I clean my deck annually or stain?

I planned on finishing my deck with semi-transparent stain. However, I'm not so keen on the maintenance and re-staining every couple years. Spending an hour and $25 cleaning it every spring sounds much more appealing to me for something thats only used for a few months. I was just worried that cleaning and scrubbing it every year will damage the decking. Would it be damaging or should I just suck it up and stain it?

Cleaning the deck it's better then staining it the wood won't get damaged the way it will if you stain it

The problem with the stain the deck wood won't suck the colour it's just the surface getting the colour and every winter from the cold the pressure treated wood push out the camicales and let the stain peel

So cleaning and power wash it once a while cheaper and cleaner

Clean it then stain it. The stain prevents the wood from absorbing too much moisture which is one of the major causes of rot. You can also treat your deck with Behr Deck over or a similar product. These are paints that are rolled on and once dry they are hard, durable, easy to clean and best of all protect the wood.

A good cleaning in the spring is a good step to have a long lasting, and good looking deck. A good deck detergent, some elbow grease with a soft push broom and a pressure washer with a wide angel tip (don't want to damage the wood) will do a great job.

Stains are ok, but your stain will only be as good as the prep work. The more time you take to make sure your deck is clean and prepped properly the better the stain will look and last. When done right we have had a good stain job last 3 years or longer.

I think you just have to clean and re-stain it every couple of years. Leave it unsealed and it's going to start cracking, curling, and splitting in no time. High-quality wood stains greatly extend the life of wood. A properly stained and sealed deck will outlast an unsealed one. So, I suggest that you clean it annually and re-stain it as needed.
