Plumbing will definately have to be modified in replacing a tub with a shower base.

Hi Faith,

I have done lots of CONDO jobs and to replace bath tubs with shower stall sometimes becomes very tricky. Lot depends on who is the plumber and before you break anything discuss at length what if? Situation Some times can become ugly.

Do your home work before you break anything, think about all worst possibilities and how they will be addressed. Is it worth the hassle? Biggest fear is that Plumber is not able to see his connection to drain.

Check with plumber insurance company what kind of damages are covered in case you have a situation?

Check who is the owner of the condo just below that wash room what kind of a personality he / she is ....

Good luck.

Yes it's possible with a custom shower base...

Double check with the condo on how flexible they are.

You can leave the drain where it is by creating a custom shower base. E.g built from scratch with a pvc pan liner and concrete . You'll need to change the head of the drain to allow for the base. Technically its a modification but your not changing any of the drain structure. Depends on how strict your condo is.

I guess you could also leave the old bath spout which will avoid touching any of the water pipes in the wall. May look a little funny tho.

Yes it is. You would have to get a custom shower base. There are available as a cultured marble base and can be made to measure. Of course new tile backer and new would have to be put back up. This is all assuming that the existing tub is a tub shower combination. The only problem maybe is that the overflow from the tub would have to be cut off and depending on what the condo rules exactly say on this matter will dictate if it is possible.
