We want to redo our stair railing and newels to refresh the look, something more modern to go with the rest of the renos that have been done. Research tells me that the landing newel cannot be replaced.
So my question is, can the landing newel be covered, say by a finishing carpenter?
You could still use a matched hardwood floor on the landing?
The stairs and the entire upper level are going to be recarpeted in the next few weeks. The railing and newels (1 landing newel and 4 half newels) are all that remain to be done in the entire house. We are thinking metal spindals, wood rails and newels. The wood components we are thinking would be stained to match the new flooring on the main level. The carpet is going to be a textured carpet called spiced rum by Mohawk silk strand.
