Terminating dealings with home contractor?

We hired a contractor to do some renovations on our home. It was supposed to be a three-day job. That was over three weeks ago. Every day is something new. He's arrived three times and "forgotten" supplies and then disappeared for hours, or the entire day. Work is all half finished. He's damaged some property during his "renovation". We paid for all materials upfront (dumb, I now know.) We've also paid for some labor (which he's completed to date). He gave us the quote via text. Can we terminate and just find someone else?

Hey Tom with Trusted Trades and here's my take.

Ya. If you have spoken to him many times and voiced concern as well as there is no legal binding agreement.. Cut your loses and find someone else.

That being said, just want to clarify. Handing money upfront for materials is not at all dumb in fact for a legitimate good hearted contractors its usually mandatory.

Doing so without a legal binding agreemen that outlines the use of that money and forsees all possible issues is the mistake made here. The scenarios should be practically outline. Such as not showing up or going over the agreed upon timeline.

A good contractor will bring up and outline those scenarios and provide an agreement that is a fair solution should any said situation arise.

Aim for that contractor moving forward.

Best of luck.

You should definitely terminate them. They were paid up to date which you were nice to do. I hope you have all materials, if not they need to leave materials. That's horrible service and unfair to you.

Kick his butt out. I'm sure he couldn't pay for a lawyer unless the local bar is lending money to good customers.

Sorry for your lose but hire a reputable company that has been in business a long time. As you now know the extra $1000 would offset the aggravations that you have incurred.

Cut your loses get a real contracting company.

Not an individual no protections for you.

A real contracting company has bonds and insurance to protect you in a dispute.

It seems that no signed contract on place and based on that there is no termination. Just forget about that guy and try to find a reliable one instead.
