My contractor assures me that the Durock in the showers does not need to be waterproofed before Laying porcelain tile. Is that correct? Also, the tiles are half inch away from wall with what looks like spot bonding. Is that ok? They are large tiles.
Yes He's right.
The Durock cement panels are an aggregated Portland cement with polymer-coated, glass-fibre mesh completely encompassing edges, back and front surfaces, preventing spin out and crumbling. Lightweight tile backer board, water durable, mould-resistant for high-moisture areas. They will not rot, warp delaminate or disintegrate when exposed to water. They procure a superior tile bond are easy to cut and install.
Regarding the half inch, is it for the cement used to install the tiles? it's look like he used glue?
Any water proof substrate does not typically need to be extra water proofed (check manufacturer recommendations of products contractor is using). However mortar must also be done right, grout and then caulking. I personally do water proof everything with a roll on compound on substrate just to make it doubly sure. I never get call backs on walk in showers.
