I have shingles right now and I am thinking of putting metal roofing, is it worth it? Will it save me on energy bills?
As a roofer, I always enjoy seeing some of the sales pitches of other roofers. We install both shingles and metal and I love selling either. Here's the straight goods.
1. Shingles last twice as long as they used to. This mostly because they are all made from fiberglass instead of paper but there are other reasons.
2. Yes, tin of various styles will last 50 years or more but the nice sharp paint finish won't look that great after 30 and the neoprene washers on the screws won't last 50 years and will need to be replaced.
3. Tin used to be fairly inexpensive and shingle were poor quality so the cost per year was similar but now tin of various kinds costs 2 - 4 times shingles and the life span isn't that much different.
4. Energy saving is a marketing ploy and big stretch. Your attic space should be properly vented and alway at the ambient temp of the outside so don't fall for energy savings.
To summarize, most tin roofs we do are done for the look not for the economics.
I could not add anything from previous message Shannon wrote you. Well said Shannon!! I will emphasize on her point of having your attic properly vented with soffit venting all around the exterior as well as roof vents one for every 300 square feet. I recommend you have a minimum of R50 insulation
Have you considered Solar panels? Check it out if it's in right direction without shadow. 10kw Microfit would be in price range of 27 to 35 k. plus regular roof shingles.
This will be saving you on hydro bill from day one.
