Hi. I am looking at purchasing a home that has brand new but badly installed natural slate floors. The are uneven. Can they be fixed in some way without tearing up and replacing? They are so beautiful the situation is heartbreaking. Can't ask them to fix re deal being offered.
Hi, slate will naturally have some un even characteristics as it is a rough stone texture and reason to install slate but if it is very bad & consistent throughout (most provincial standards of workmanship allow up to 1/16" for tile grout lines to be out in spots) then "no" it cannot be fixed without tearing up and then re-doing. And of course you can ask it to be included as a deficiency repair in the house selling price just like a bad roof, worn kitchen etc. that must be fixed by a buyer. slate is expensive to buy and install, allow up to $30-$40/sqft. to remove, probably install new underlayment and then replace with new slate
