Hello I run a small renovation business and am looking to expand things at some point, I am not a licensed carpenter/contractor which in Ontario you do not need to be I have the proper insurance and business number/hst number.

My Question is if there are jobs that require permits say for decks/basements am I being unlicensed still able to preform the work as long as it meets the code standards they set out, Im pretty sure im good just need some confirmation.

Thanks

You can do all of the renovation work without a license. Except any electrical or Plumbing work those trades do require a license and usually separate permits.

Jason, Colin is correct in most municipalities. In addition to the advice on electrical and plumbing, I tell my clients that I can't do any work that is illegal or won't meet codes. Protect yourself.

Hi Jason,

You can build whatever you want adhering to code standards. But, if it comes to light that you are building without a permit, it usually costs double at that point, the site would be shut down, you could also be fined, and if you get caught in this scenario often enough...I'm sure you would be black listed / shut down.

Also, if you construct a deck for example, and it collapses causing injury, your insurance MAY be void and you could be help liable...if it was constructed without a permit.

There's more to it than building to code...that's simply protocol, not an achievement.

Check with your local permit / building authority & go from there.

Also to add on earlier replies. Gas pipe, Only use liscence Gas technician. Underpinning, flat torch down roofing only by insured and specialist. These areas one has to be very careful.

My views.
