Unnecessary plumbing job

My plumbing backed up to my main floor laundry and kitchen sink in December. I called a plumber to fix it and he replaced a bunch of pipes that he said were clogged, rented a snake and charged $603.

Four days later, the waste water came back exactly as before.

Since then the municipal plumbers determined it was tree roots, tore them out and the waste water stopped backing up completely.

I haven't paid the plumber yet, but I literally don't know what to do. I'm afraid that if I don't pay the bill, they will take me to small claims court. Has anyone ever experienced this? Thanks, Ted

You hired the plumber , he fixed what he though was wrong, and cleared the pipes.

He charged you for the work he did.

Just because the problem come back doesn't mean the work he did wasn't needed ,

And wasn't the cause of the water to back up.

He charged you for services you and he thought was needed .

By not paying him .isnt right.

Not much different then getting a light bulb fixed

On your car, and paying for it ,

Then finding out the reason why your car burns out lights is because the wires have a short because they were burnt on the engine.

He did his job, but just not all of it,

And would have charged more for more work

Hi Ted,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Unfortunately, when you hire a service company to rectify an issue, you have no choice but to trust them. After all, you called them in the first place because you needed help. When a plumber clears a plugged drain, they usually won't warranty it as they are not responsible for the existing condition of the drain. So you might be on the hook for that bill from the original plumber. If the tree roots were in fact the cause of the problem, then it sounds like the pipe replacement was unnecessary.

As an owner, I really don't like not getting paid for work my crew has performed. With that being said, if a customer calls me explaining my crew charged 600 dollars and didn't solve the problem correctly, I would be open to adjusting the invoice. I would recommend calling the owner and explaining how the municipality was able to solve the problem and informed you that it wasn't correctly addressed the first time. If you get resistance, then unfortunately you are left with two choices. 1. Pay the bill, buy a 6 pack and try to forget about it or 2. Tell them to bring on small claims court, where I think you might have a case.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Hi Ted,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble. Unfortunately, when you hire a contractor, you are putting your trust in that company/individual. Ultimately, you will probably have to pay the bill. But here are a couple of key points:

Are they licensed?

Did you have an estimate?

Did you have a contract?

You can always take them to small claims court for the unrequired/over billed work, bit this could be costly. $600 for a snake rental is rediculous, I could buy 3 of them for that price. Also you can warn other people about the company/individual online. I hope this works out for you, all the best.
